CHOOSING
EXTERIOR COLORS
Below
is a simple list of color considerations that may be helpful in choosing
colors for your exterior painting project. Fairfield Painting clients
enjoy custom color consultation based on the color groups they are considering.
Our extensive experience enables us to quickly recommend color combinations
and to direct customers to sample homes within specific color groups.
Inconsistent wood grain or texture on shingles or siding significantly
effects its appearance. See Texture Considerations
for examples.
A flat or matte finish minimizes the appearance of surface imperfections.
Darker colors usually minimize the appearance of surface imperfections.
Darker colors give the illusion of making houses smaller.
Lighter colors give the illusion of making houses bigger.
Contrasting colors on body and trim can have the visual effect
of chopping a house up and making it look smaller.
Consider the color of your roof and the effects of sunlight and
shade on your color.
De-emphasize unattractive elements (i.e. attic vents, downspouts,
low quality woodwork.) by painting them the same as the body.
Emphasize attractive elements (i.e. outstanding woodwork, shutters
or decorative siding) by painting it a contrasting color and or by increasing
its sheen.
A Word About Yellow.
In
our experience we have encountered more color selection mistakes with
yellow then with all other colors combined. Yellows have a nasty tendency
of appearing much brighter on a house than they do on small chips or samples.
After making an initial color selection, you may want to confirm it by
taking our Exterior Color Tour.
