Lighter colors give the illusion of making rooms bigger.
Darker colors give the illusion of making rooms smaller.
A white or light colored ceiling gives the illusion of adding height
or raising the ceiling.
Contrasting colors on walls and trim can have the effect of making
a room feel smaller.
De-emphasize unattractive elements by painting them the same as
walls. (i.e. baseboard heaters, vents, low quality woodwork, doorbell
chimes)
Emphasize attractive elements (i.e. outstanding woodwork) by painting
it a contrasting color and or by increasing the sheen.
A flat or matte finish significantly minimizes the appearance of
surface imperfections.
A flat or matte finish is not as washable as a glossy finish.
Lighting and surrounding colors effect a colorŐs appearance. It
is always best to check your chips or samples in the room or area you
are painting.
A Word About Yellow.
In
our experience we have encountered more color selection mistakes with
yellow then with all other colors combined. Yellows have a nasty tendency
of appearing much brighter on walls than they do on small chips or samples.
